Hiking Trail Description
The historical, geological and environmental features of this area make it a valuable focus for educational projects, such as those developed by the Grahamstown Centre of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Southern Africa who organise such schemes. Smaller mammals are conserved in the Succulent Thicket of the reserve.
In 1837 Andrew Geddes Bain was instructed by the military authorities of the Eastern Frontier to construct a road from Grahamstown to Fort Beaufort. He often camped on the site, observed and methodically listed the sediments containing fossil remains. His book on the subject added evidence to the Continental Drift Theory. A plaque commemorates him.
Direction:
Fifteen km from Grahamstown on the way to Fort Beaufort (look for the A G Bain Monument) at the Ecca Pass.
About 2 hours to cover the 3 km of the two walks.
Information plinths clearly indicated footpaths, picnic and braai areas, bins and parking.
