Hiking Trail Description
These trails weave through the northern foothills of the Sneeuberg, some 350 km from Bloemfontein. The one and three day alternative trails are located on a farm and may be hiked during weekends. There is a wealth of bird life (over 80 species have been identified) and mammals such as baboon, hare, lynx, jackal, steenbok, grey rhebuck and kudu may be seen.
The hike starts from a cottage, built in 1903, below Kompasberg (the highest peak in the Eastern Cape: 2502 m) and overnight in a large farmhouse or shed. Both cater for 12 people, with beds, ablution and braai facilities, and are warmed with fireplaces. The farmhouse operates as a guest lodge
