Hiking Trail Description

| Die bekende boog is gelee in die Cederberge naby Ceres |
 |
Few mountain regions in southern African can boast the magnificent scenery of the Cederberg. Centuries of wind and rain have sculpted extraordinary rock formations out of the soft sandstone and gnarled cedar trees seemingly grow from the rocks on the highest peaks, while several rare plant species such as the snow Protea and the rocket pincushion can be found only in this range. The Cederberg is crisscrossed by an extensive network of well-maintained footpaths and today it is one of the most popular backpacking and climbing areas in South Africa. A large number of routes are available to backpackers. Options range from day excursions from a base camp to weekend and week-long trips.
A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 people are permitted on the trails. The wilderness area has been divided into three zones: the northern zone, which includes Pakhuis and Skerpioensberg, the central area extending southwards to the Wolfberg and the western extremity of the wilderness area. A maximum of 50 people per day is permitted into each zone, including privately owned property.
The Cederberg lends itself to creating a large variety of routes, ranging from short weekend outings to more extensive backpacking expeditions lasting several days. Trails can be combined to create a variety of longer trails.
