Hiking Trail Description
Cape Recife Lighthouse is the third-oldest lighthouse on the South African coast (built in 1851). The flat rocks abound with sea life at low tide. Keep to the beach past the lighthouse to the car park at Chelsea Bay. Here, leave the beach and follow the gravel road. A by-pass sand dune typical of many east coast peninsulas is included in the reserve. Dense fynbos and limestone outcrops are botanically interesting. A short climb to ruins of wartime lookout buildings provides a panoramic view. Continue on the gravel road to the gate. Take drinking water.
9 km / 3 hours; moderate; circular.
Amenities:
The trail passes reed beds where a bird hide can be used to see ducks, waders, black crake, purple gallinule and little bittern. Take drinking water. Information centre near entrance. Pamphlet with map available from Municipal Parks and Recreation.
Permission:
Walkers: free. No permit is required for hikers leaving their vehicles outside the gate. Vehicles need a permit obtainable at the entrance to the reserve.
